CyberPatriot

It is time once again to be thinking about CyberPatriot.

WHAT IS CYBERPATRIOT?
CyberPatriot the National Youth Cyber Education Program created by the Air Force Association (AFA) to inspire K-12 students toward careers in cybersecurity or other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our nation’s future. The three CyberPatriot Programs are:

THE NATIONAL YOUTH CYBER DEFENSE COMPETITION

At the center of CyberPatriot is the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition. The competition puts teams of high school and middle school students in the position of newly hired IT professionals tasked with managing the network of a small company. In the rounds of competition, teams are given a set of virtual images that represent operating systems and are tasked with finding cybersecurity vulnerabilities within the images and hardening the system while maintaining critical services.  Teams compete for the top placement within their state and region, and the top teams in the nation earn all-expenses paid trips to Baltimore, MD for the National Finals Competition where they can earn national recognition and scholarship money.

AFA CYBERCAMPS

AFA CyberCamps emphasize fun, hands-on learning of cybersecurity principles that are relevant and applicable to everyday life. At CyberCamp, students learn the importance of cyber safety and how to protect their personal devices and information from outside threats. The AFA CyberCamp curriculum was first piloted during the summer of 2014. CyberPatriot supported camps at twenty-four schools and organizations during the inaugural season of the AFA CyberCamp Program in summer 2015 and will have over 75 camps in the summer of 2016.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CYBER EDUCATION INITIATIVE

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

It is the first part of the CyberPatriot Program that we actively participate in through the fall/winter season.
Shorty Powers Composite Squadron, with the Lewis Composite Squadron, has participated in the CyberPatriot program for the past 7 years with the upcoming CyperPatriot X competition being our 8th season.
The approach this year will be slightly different. We will have some training by experienced cadets, in addition to weekly training hosted by Maj Danley and Capt Schramka on Monday evenings. Our goal is to advance our skills to reach the national competition in Baltimore, MD.
As mentioned above, the program is for cadets in grades 6 through 12. You need to have an interest in computers and computer security but you don’t have to have those skills already established. The training that will be provided will provide you with everything you need to be a CyberPatriot competitor.
Weekly training will start the Monday following Labor Day. The full competition schedule is on the http://uscyberpatriot.org website.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact myself, Capt Schramka, or any of the cadets who have participated in the past.
